Pie-eyed

I knew there was somewhere I had to be today. Right now, as I type, people are tucking into wonderful pastry at the first ever British Pie Awards, held at St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray. Pies of all categories - be that pork, steak and kidney, fish, vegetarian, cornish pasty and even football ground - will be tasted by a line of judges, each with strict rules and regulations.

I feel I've missed out on this. Pork pies are my favourite meaty treat, up there with faggots (officially my favourite meal), haggis and sausages. Actually saying that, I love nothing more than a cornish pasty too. In fact, I'll say it, I love pies!

Perhaps I should launch the www.bbccountryfile.com pork pie award. Hmmm, that's a thought.

In the meantime, why don't you tell us your favourite kind of British pie by voting in our poll? (And yes, before people start complaining, we haven't included fish pie, cottage pie or shepherd's pie because we've gone for pies totally encased in artery clogging pasty).
