Five of the best dog-friendly beaches

With the weather brightening, responsible dog owners across the UK should make the most of our coastal treasures before summer time bathers take over. Join Caroline Rhodes as she picks her top five dog-friendly beaches

1. Durdle Door, Dorset
This unspoilt and beautiful stretch of shingle beach allows dogs on leads and will instil any walker with a sense of childhood adventure. With ancient rock arches and steep cliff paths over the clear waters, it offers great walks and some of the finest views along the south coast.

2. Rhosilli Bay, the Gower
For a good long run and a real taste of freedom there is no better stretch than these miles of sand. At the end of the glorious Gower Peninsula, this beach pulls huge crowds in the summer months, so make the most of the wide open space at this more dog-friendly time of the year.

3. Perranporth, Cornwall
While your dogs frolics in the spray, spot the many surfers who come here religiously to brave the Atlantic waves. Perfect for rest and refreshment, the bustling Watering Hole nestles in the centre of this 3 mile beach, and also welcomes well behaved dogs.

4. Whitstable, Kent
This pretty maritime town boasts a dramatic dog-friendly beach, which at low tide reveals The Street, a half-mile strip of land that you can walk along until it disappears into the rich waters. The Neptune pub is another notable feature of this beach, and a great place to watch the sun set.

5. Balmedie, Aberdeen
Balmedie is home to 5 miles of stunning dunes, so if you and your dog seek some solitude, this is the perfect beach. You can walk alone but for the sound of the waves and birds. However, if you fancy a family gathering, you can hire a beach barbecue from April to September.
