1. Ba Games, Kirkwall, Orkney, New Year's Day
A mass rugby game storms the streets of Kirkwall each year and has since 1850. Depending on family loyalties, participants are divided into two teams; the Uppies and Doonies. Each tries to move the ball either up or down the street. It can take several hours of play before a conclusive victory is called. The Doonies goal is the sea, while the Uppies attempt to score by rounding Mackinson's corner at the junction of Main Street with New Scapa Road. The ball is thrown up at 1pm and the game begins.
2. Northern Ireland Bootcamp Detox Weekend, County Down 20th-22nd January

3. Bath Tub Race, Poole Harbour, New Year's Day
The Pirates of Poole take to the water in unusual crafts plunged into the harbour water. Spectators line the quays to watch the race before enjoying the local pubs on the quayside. The race starts at 11.00am at the fishing steps outside the Customs House.

4. Llanwrtyd Wells Saturnalia Beer Festival and Mountain Bike Chariot Racing, Wales, 14 January
Not so much a detox but definitely a lot of fun! This event commemorates a major Roman festival with plenty of beers, wines and Roman foods, bike chariot racing, a feast, the Saturnalia Ramble and toga dress-up as well as many more events and activities.
2. Serpentine 10km & 3km Runs, Hyde Park, London, New Year's Day
Either take part of watch the historic run which takes place in the beautiful setting of Hyde Park’s Serpentine every year on New Years Day. Registration for the event is at 9.30am. The 10k race starts at 11:00 and the 3k fun run starts at 12:00. Both races start on Main Street and finish near the new Boathouse. If you don’t fancy dusting off your running shoes, they are always looking for volunteers.
6. Lakes Fitness Boot Camp for Ladies, Arnside, Cumbria, 15 January
The five day boot camp runs from Sunday 15th January to Friday 20th January and includes 43 hours of physical exercise in a five star gold accommodation at a Boutique B&B. 7. National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire

9. New Year’s Day Swim from Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire
A tradition since 1984, this icy swim is now a charity event so you can dress up in a costume along with1000 plus swimmers both to raise money and have a refreshing New Year. 12.30pm start.
10. Salisbury New Year's Day Ghost Walk
A professional guide takes your through the medieval city of Salisbury and introduces you to a ghostly population of past residents. Good for a family day out on New Year's Day.
