Make your own Easter decorations and treats

From Chocolate Eggs to ginger biscuits and Easter Trees, here are five easy decorations and tasty treats to enjoy this Easter.

Make Chocolate Easter Eggs:

Although it sounds ambitious, making Chocolate Easter Eggs is remarkably simple. With oodles of chocolate involved, it is the ideal way to spend a cosy evening in the run up to Easter. All you need is an egg mould and 250g of chocolate.

Here's how: 

Step 1: Break the chocolate into small pieces, and melt in a heatproof bowl over simmering water. Stir occasionally. When melted, take off the heat and leave to cool.

Step 2: Once cooled, yet still runny, place a spoonful in the moulds and spread evenly with a brush. Leave for 5 minutes and repeat the process. Leave to set.

Step 3: Once set, ease the chocolate halves out and stick them together with melted chocolate. Decorate with Chocolate buttons, jelly diamonds and sugar sweets, fixed with melted chocolate. For a more delicate spring feel, drape and swirl melted white chocolate over your egg and stick on sugar flowers and butterflies. Alternatively, create an Easter scene, using piping icing to create Easter bunnies, chicks and baskets. Once finished, place your egg in a nest of tissue paper, and delight in your masterpieceble.

 

Create a Table Easter Tree Decoration:

An Easter Tree is wonderful addition to your home this Easter, with its colourful painted eggs hanging from its branches this decoration will look great on your kitchen table. 

Making this decoration is simple, and is a fun family activity that children of all ages will enjoy.

Here's how to make your tree in four simple steps:

Step 1: Finding the Easter branch, the centrepiece for the Easter Tree, from which painted blown eggs will dangle, is essential. So, on a family spring walk, look out for a fallen branch, big enough to hold 10 eggs. Once collected, place in a large vase.

Step 2: Next blow the eggs. Taking a needle, pierce both ends of each egg, and once a small hole is made, blow at one end over a bowl. When all the liquid has come out of the shell, wash and dry the eggs to decorate.

Step 3: Use paint, a paintbrush and a sponge decorate your eggs. To create a background, sponge your chosen colour over the egg – light blues, greens, yellows and oranges are bright spring colours. Flowers, spots and stripes all make pretty patterns. Alternatively, why not create an Easter scene? Children will enjoy painting the Easter bunny or spring chicks on their eggs.

Step 4: Once finished, thread your eggs with ribbon, tying a knot or threading a button at the bottom to secure it. Make a bow and hang the eggs on your Easter Tree.

How to make Easter Ginger Biscuits:

Rustle up these delicious ginger biscuits and impress your friends and family this Easter. Made using Easter cut outs, and decorated with Easter icing patterns, they make for a colourful treat to indulge in over Easter. This recipe makes 20.

Ingredients:

12oz plain flour

2 teaspoons of ground ginger

1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda

4oz butter or margarine

6oz soft light brown sugar

1 egg

4 tablespoons of golden syrup or maple syrup

 

Method:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180C and line two baking trays with greaseproof paper.

Step 2: Mix the dry dry ingredients together in a large bowl, and rub in the butter until it looks like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar.

Step 3: In a separate bowl, beat together the egg and syrup. Add the mixture to the dry ingredients and butter, and stir until smooth.

Step 4: Lightly flour your surface and roll out the dough to just under 1cm thick. Using a bunny, chick or oval cutter, cut out the dough. Place the biscuits on the trays and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Leave to cool for five minutes, before placing them on a cooling rack.

Step 5: Once cooled, the biscuits can be decorated. Using white icing, outline your shapes, creating noses and bob tails for your bunnies, and beaks and wings for your chicks. On the oval shaped biscuits, using white and coloured icing, draw flowers, spots and stripes to create Easter patterns. Alternatively, coat your biscuits in coloured icing and decorate them with edible goodies, such as small white chocolate buttons to create bunny tails and diamond jellies cut in half to create beaks. Once finished, dunk in your tea and enjoy.

 

Grow an Easter Garden:

An Easter Garden, decorated with moss, flowers and fallen bird eggs is a lovely way to bring nature into your home this Easter. A tradition since Victorian times, making a garden is a wonderful way of spending a family afternoon.

Step 1: Begin your Easter Garden by finding a shallow bowl or tray for its base. Alternatively, if you are making a smaller, more delicate garden, use a clamshell. Fill your base with a little soil, making a mound on one side for a hill.

Step 2: In your own garden, collect moss, twigs, and flowers. Making the garden as natural as possible is key, so the more the better! Once collected, cover the soil in moss, and place the flowers on it.  

Step 3: As a celebration of spring, place any fallen bird eggshells you can find in your garden on the garden, along with Easter chicks, bird feathers and chocolate eggs.  

 

Bake Easter Carrot Cupcakes:

Gorgeous, simple, and particularly apt for Easter, Carrot Cupcakes are a fabulous alternative to the traditional Easter cake. Iced with a delicious cream cheese frosting, they are mouth-wateringly moreish. Makes 12 cupcakes.

Ingredients for the Cupcakes:  

2 large eggs

150g light muscovado sugar

200g self-raising flour

150ml sunflower oil

2-3stp mixed spice

1tsp bicarbonate of soda

200g grated carrots

Zest 1 orange

Ingredients for the Icing:

100g soft butter

300g soft cheese

200g icing sugar

1tsb vanilla extract

Method:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 180C, and line a 12-hole muffin tin with Easter cases. A muffin tin is preferable, as otherwise the mixture may spill over.

Step 2: In a large bowl, stir together the flour, mixed spice, bicarbonate of soda, sugar and orange zest. In a separate bowl, beat together the eggs and oil. Stir the mixture into the flour blend, and, adding the grated carrot, stir until evenly blended.

Step 3: Divide the mixture between the cases and put in the oven for between 22-25 minutes, until the skewer comes out of the cakes clean. Once out of the over, place the cupcakes on a wire rack and cool before icing.

Step 4: Make the cream cheese frosting by beating together the soft butter with cream cheese. Cream until smooth and light, add the icing sugar and mix together. When a thick consistency is reached, pipe onto the cupcakes, and ornament with a sugar carrot on top or a small chocolate Easter mini egg.
