In the years since the first tree was planted at the National Memorial Arboretum, the former quarry has transformed into a forested oasis. Inspiring and life-affirming, the Arboretum is the UK’s year-round centre of Remembrance and home to more than 300 memorials for the UK’s military and civilian services and associations. There are specimen and native trees in both the formal gardens and burgeoning woodlands, so there’s lots to see and explore in the free-to-enter site.
Along with a varied programme of daily walks, talks and tours, this summer the Arboretum will commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Passchendaele with a series of events and activities from 31 July to 10 November. The programme, 1917: Empire at War, will not only remember the battle, but will also focus on the social changes that occurred during the First World War on the home front. Activities will include a service of Remembrance on 31 July, Empire at War and Women at War guided walks, a replica above-ground trench to explore, an art project that visitors are encouraged to contribute to, and the Home Front Proms on 5 August.
