The Lake District, Cumbria
As seen in: The Lakes (1997-99)
Jimmy McGovern’s The Lakes starred John Simm and told a dark story about a Liverpudlian attempting to escape his past by taking a job in a hotel in the beautiful surroundings of the Lake District.
The show was filmed primarily in two locations at the south end of Ullswater at the lake’s head, namely Patterdale and Glenridding. Fans of the show might want to base themselves at the Inn on the Lake in Patterdale, where much of the filming took place. Access to both is simple via the A592, which is just off the A66 near Penrith.
The scenery speaks for itself, and you can get a good grounding of what the area has to offer by taking a leisurely steam cruiser from Patterdale to Pooley Bridge at the opposite end of the lake, or go hiking up Helvellyn, the third highest peak in England at 950m (3,117ft).
