The world-famous railway line carves its way through some of the Yorkshire Dales most dramatic scenery and the remote fells of Westmorland. The hard climbing done, it the passes through Cumbria’s verdant Eden Valley before arriving at the historic border city of Carlisle. The Settle-Carlisle Railway has become etched in history as the line they tried to close – but failed. More than 30 years ago, it came perilously close to being shut forever but at the last moment was reprieved. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength and is loved for its sense of history and the impossibly dramatic setting.
