The dog, named Vera, was out with her owner Martin Callister when she got stuck in the hole on the Jinny Nature Trail near Burton-Upon-Trent, Staffordshire.

Fire crews attended the scene on Tuesday lunchtime and, after digging for an hour, managed to free the terrified hound, which ran straight to her worried owner.

Firefighter Simon Cartlidge from Burton Fire Station said, “The details are quite sketchy – I have no idea how she got in.

“We were called by the owner who said his dog had been trapped underground for 24 hours.

“We could hear her yapping and when you put a hand in the hole you could feel her nose.

“It was just a case of digging away and getting the owner to call her name.”

Mr Cartlidge added, “When she came out the owner could not thank us enough. She made a beeline straight for him.”

It is not the first time that Vera has had to be rescued by the fire service.

Back in 2009, when just an 11-month-old puppy, Vera had to be winched to safety after she became trapped at the bottom of a 25ft sewage tank.

She was chasing a rabbit.
