Beach of the Year 2015/16

Winner: Sand Beach, Wester Ross

Some might have thought that a distant beach on the outskirts of Wester Ross would be overlooked in beach-popularity contest. But our well-travelled readers voted in their droves to ensure that the remote Sand Beach, nestled near the village of Applecross in Wester Ross, came storming home with the lion’s share of the votes. These intrepid adventurers know that the journey to reach this beach is an immensely rewarding one, winding along one of the most dramatic roads in the UK.

The beach itself offers stunning views, a large sandy bay, calm waters, sand dunes and epic sunsets. It was home to TV presenter Monty Halls during his 2009 programme Great Escapes on BBC2; and to Mesolithic dwellers about 9,500 years ago – you can still see their ancient rock shelter.

BBC presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff comments: “Many congratulations to the stunning Sand Beach – miles of uninterrupted natural landscape and some of the most stunning sunsets you’ll ever see.

“I am a real lover of huge and unspoilt beaches with minimal facilities so one can just appreciate the beauty of the place with no distractions – Sand Beach ticks all my boxes, and more!”

Runner up: Marloes Sand, Pembrokeshire

A fabulous 1.5km remote sandy beach with spectacular geology and an iron age hill fort, excellent birdwatching (including puffins and peregrines offshore; stonechat and snipe inland) and undulating heathland.
