Most dogs and cats scratch themselves from time to time, but how can you tell when it's something more problematic? Fleas can be surprisingly difficult to spot in the earliest stages, and by the time you do, they may already have spread across your home.
Here are the key warning signs your pet may be harbouring fleas and how to prevent them from taking hold of your home.
5 signs your pets might have fleas

1. Your pet is scratching more than usual
Pay attention to frequent scratching, especially around the head, neck and base of the tail. If your pet seems more interested in scratching themselves outside of playful activities, it could be a sign of fleas.
2. They seem restless, especially at night
Fleas are relentless biters, causing major discomfort and restlessness in pets. If your typically calm companion becomes unusually agitated, fleas may be the culprit.
3. Red patches start appearing
Flea bites can lead to red, irritated skin. If you spot any areas where your pet's fur is thin and their skin seems sore, check further for fleas. In particularly severe cases, keep an eye out for hair loss, too. Consistent scratching can lead to thinning fur, especially in the back and hindquarters.
4. Black specks are a tell tale sign
Tiny black specks, often called 'flea dirt' are flea droppings made up of digested blood. They look a little like dirt or pepper and can often be easier to spot than the fleas themselves.
5. You've spotted a flea in your home
Finding one flea isn't something to be ignored. A common misconception is that an infestation lives on your pet, but only a small portion actually do.
95% of a flea infestation isn't on your pet
Fleas actively avoid light and live deep within carpets, bedding, sofas and cracks in flooring.
Not only are they incredibly resilient, a single flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day. Under the right conditions, those eggs can rapidly develop into a new generation of fleas and, ultimately, an infestation.
Fleas are most active in summer - here’s how you can prevent them
Flea numbers typically rise during the warmer months as the conditions accelerate their breeding cycle. Unfortunately a small flea problem can transform into a much larger issue.
By the time you spot fleas on your pet, there's probably a good chance they're already spreading around your home. To prevent this from happening, it's best to be proactive.
