Sturgeon Moon: How and when to see this week's majestic summer full moon

Everything you need to know about the Sturgeon Moon, when it takes place this year and what the spiritual meaning is behind it

While it's not a particularly popular fish for British people today, the freshwater lake sturgeon formed a significant part of the Native American diet. As a result, the first full moon of August takes its name from this fish. Here, we explain all there is to know about the Sturgeon Moon and how you can see it for yourself.

When is the Sturgeon Moon?

The Sturgeon Moon usually appears in August. This year's full Sturgeon Moon will appear on 9 August 2025.

Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon?

For Native Americans, sturgeons were particularly plentiful in the Great Lakes in August, so will have been a staple part of their diet during this month in particular.

Did you know? The sturgeon might not be a staple in UK diets today, but it does have a special place in UK history. King Edward II declared it a "royal fish", decreeing that any sturgeon caught must be offered to the Crown. Overfishing and habitat destruction led to the decline of the sturgeon in UK waters.

The Sturgeon Moon is sometimes also called the Red Moon, due to the summer haze that casts a reddish light on the moon when it rises. It has also been called the Green Corn Moon, which refers to the fact that August was the time when corn was ready to be harvested.

Where is the best place to see the Sturgeon Moon?

To get the best view of the Sturgeon Moon, head to open countryside, ideally far from city lights and light pollution. National parks, countryside hills or coastal areas with uninterrupted views of the horizon are perfect.

August can have clearer skies compared to earlier summer months, but visibility of the Sturgeon Moon can still be impacted by haze and cloud cover, especially after days of high humidity.

Check the local moonrise times wherever you are for the best times to see the Sturgeon Moon.

Is there a spiritual meaning?

Each full moon represents something in the natural world and reflects something in the energy of that particular time. The Sturgeon Moon is said to be concerned with strength and perseverance.
