Best walks in Dublin

In Dublin itself, leafy St Stephen’s Green is a lovely spot for a stroll. Away from the waterfall, central fountain and group yoga classes, however, reminders of the city’s tumultuous history exist in the Famine Victims Memorial and the information boards that recap the Easter Rising of 1916.

Bullet marks from the seismic battle between the Irish Citizen Army and British forces are evident in the walls of the nearby Royal College of Surgeons, with the rebellion Easter Rising leading to the Irish War of Independence against British forces from 1919-1921.

It has been known to rain in Dublin, so if you need a break from the pubs, the free Chester Beatty Library in the grounds of Dublin Castle is a remarkable collection of historical artefacts, manuscripts and snuff pipes sourced by mining magnate Sir Alfred Chester Beatty.

Further afield, the Wicklow Mountains loom to the south of the city, with the 127-130km (80-81 mile) Wicklow Way long-distance trail starting in Dublin and ending in Clonegal, County Carlow.

Alternatively, catch the 1:20hr-long St. Kevin’s Bus to Glendalough in Wicklow from St. Stephen's Green North Stop 181, costing 23 Euros for a return ticket. Tickets can’t be booked in advance, so get there early at the weekends ahead of the 11am departure to secure a place near the front of the queue and better chance of boarding the first bus of the day (extra buses will also arrive, depending on demand).

Glendalough is home to a remarkable monastic settlement from the 5th century and two beautiful lakes. They’re both busy on summer weekends, but head to towards the Miners Village on the northern shore to escape the crowds and have a swim in solitude.  Circular walking routes are clearly signposted, too, just don’t miss the final bus home!

Where to stay in Dublin

We stayed courtesy of the new 5* Chancery Hotel, located behind Dublin Castle and within easy walk to Temple Bar or St Stephen’s Green, and boasting 150 stylish rooms, a fully equipped gym and restaurant.

Elsewhere, The Shelbourne Hotel is one of Dublin’s most famous luxury hotels, while Motel One Dublin is a more affordable option.
