Who is Maggie Aderin-Pocock?
Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock is a British space scientist, TV presenter and author. She has co-presented the BBC astronomy TV programme The Sky at Night since 2014. She was awarded an MBE in 2009 for services to science and science education, and later awarded a DBE in 2024 for services to science education and diversity.
What is she famous for?
Maggie Aderin-Pocock is known for her promotion of STEM subjects among school children; it's estimated that she's spoken to around 35,000 school children across the world.
In her earlier career, she worked on aircraft missile warning systems, handheld instruments that detected landmines, the Gemini telescope in Chile and the Aeolus satellite.
She is the first black woman to win a gold medal in the Physics News Award, in 2020. In 2023, Mattel created a Barbie doll of her to celebrate International Women's Day.

Maggie Aderin-Pocock studied physics at Imperial College London, then completed a PhD in mechanical engineering. She has been given a honorary degree by Staffordshire University, an honorary fellow by the British Science Association and honorary doctor of science by the University of Bath.

Yes, she is married to Martin Pocock. They have one daughter together.
