I’m always on the lookout for gear that can keep up with both trail days and town errands, and the Patagonia Terravia Tote Pack 24L immediately caught my eye. It’s part backpack, part tote, and promises to be as versatile as your weekend plans. After testing it on a few hikes, daily commutes, and even a supermarket run, I’ve got a pretty good sense of what it does well, and where it could do better.

Design and Portability

Design-wise, the Terravia Tote Pack 24L really works for me. I love the option to carry it as a tote or wear it as a backpack, perfect for shifting between hiking and daily life. The breathable padded straps are surprisingly comfortable, and when I don’t need them, they tuck away neatly. It’s slim enough to feel unobtrusive but still has room for everything I need. Whether I’m out hiking, on the beach or in town, its lightweight design and versatility make it really convenient.

The two oversized stretch-mesh water bottle pockets come in handy, however depending on your bottle you might find them too loose. It also stows away into its own pocket so it’s easily storable when not in use, and I’ve even used it as a travel pillow.

Comfort and Support

I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable the Terravia Tote Pack 24L is, especially for something so minimal. The padded shoulder straps feel soft and supportive, even when I’ve loaded it up with gear. They distribute weight well without digging in, and the overall fit stays secure without shifting around thanks to the adjustable chest clips.

When not well-packed, the bag can flop and lack form, making it unstable or awkward to carry and it's clearly not a heavy-duty hiking pack, but for light treks, urban walks, or casual carry, it hits a great balance between comfort and simplicity.

Build Quality and Materials

One thing I’ve come to expect from Patagonia is solid construction, and the Terravia Tote Pack 24L definitely delivers. It’s made from 100% recycled nylon ripstop, which feels fairly tough yet lightweight and is weather resistant. The fabric has handled scuffs, light rain, and dirt without showing wear, and the stitching all feels strong and reliable.

The material is thin, and sometimes when I overload the bag I'm worried I might stretch or rip the material, however, that hasn't happened yet. I do have a couple of concerns about the strength of the bottle pockets on the sides as when the bag is resting on the ground or tightly packed they can get pushed out.

Capacity and Organisation

At 24 litres, the Terravia Tote Pack hits that sweet spot – big enough to carry my hiking essentials, lunch, and an extra layer, but not so bulky that it feels like overkill for daily use.

Inside, there’s a simple main compartment with a hydration sleeve that doubles nicely for a laptop, plus two smaller pockets, and internal clips at the top to help keep things packed down and in place.

If, like me, you tend to throw things in your bag with free abandon, smaller items can get slightly lost in the main compartment, but that’s mainly down to my bad organisation!

Value For Money

£85 is not a small about of money, but for its versatility, durability, and sustainable materials, the Terravia Tote offers solid value–especially if you need one bag that works for both trail and town.

Sustainability

The Terravia Tote Pack is made with 100% recycled nylon ripstop, reflecting Patagonia’s strong sustainability focus. It’s bluesign approved and Fair Trade Certified sewn, meaning it’s produced with environmentally responsible materials and ethical labor practices. The durable design also reduces the need for frequent replacements, making it a more sustainable long-term choice. If you care about reducing your environmental footprint while still getting high-performance gear, this pack checks a lot of the right boxes.

Should You Buy It?

If you want a lightweight, versatile, and eco-conscious pack for hikes and everyday use, the Terravia is a smart buy.
