As someone who spends plenty of time outdoors, I’m always on the lookout for the best waterproof trousers that balance comfort, protection and sustainability. The Patagonia Women’s Granite Crest Waterproof Trousers promise all three – made from recycled fishing nets and built to handle tough weather. I’ve been testing them in typically unpredictable British conditions, such as Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) to see how they perform when the rain really sets in.

Design and Fit
From the moment I put them on, I really liked the fit of the Patagonia Granite Crest Waterproof Trousers. The waist band fits perfectly, tight enough to fit well, but with space for tucking a base later into. The three quarter side zips are great for slipping them on and off over hiking boots, and for breathability, and the handy zip pockets are good too.
The material is quite lightweight, which is great for packability, but it doesn’t feel as tough as some heavier-duty shells when brushing past sharp rocks or heather. They’re excellent for fast, lightweight hikes – but maybe not the best option for full days of rough mountain use.

Waterproofing and Breathability
I’ve been really impressed with the Patagonia Granite Crest Waterproof Trousers on several hikes in drizzly and windy conditions. On a long coastal walk, they kept me dry through persistent light rain, and on a woodland trail, their breathability prevented me from overheating even while climbing steep sections.
I did notice, though, that during a particularly heavy, all-day downpour, the fabric began to wet out slightly, especially on my lower back, so they’re not completely impervious in extreme conditions. Overall, they strike a great balance between staying dry and staying comfortable across a variety of walks
Durability and Build Quality
The fabric felt surprisingly tough for something so light – I brushed against sharp slate and rough bracken plenty of times, and there wasn’t a single tear or snag. Rain, sleet, and even a bit of snow couldn’t get through, and the taped seams really held up. The articulated knees and gusseted crotch made scrambling and steep ascents feel effortless – though I did notice the lower cuffs soaked a bit when brushing through wet grass or splashing through streams. Overall, they strike a brilliant balance between durability, mobility, and weight – I felt protected without feeling weighed down, which made those rugged Glyderau ridges far more enjoyable.

Practical Features
The Patagonia Granite Crest trousers are full of practical touches that make life on the trail much easier. The long side zips mean I could pull them on and off over my boots without faffing about – a real bonus when the weather turns suddenly. The waist zip and snap fastenings stayed secure even when scrambling or crouching, and the articulated knees and gusseted crotch gave me freedom of movement on tricky slopes. I also appreciated the ankle press-studs and tie‑downs – they helped keep water and mud out, though I still had to be mindful in long wet grass. Every little feature felt thoughtfully designed, making long days in Eryri National Park far more comfortable and fuss‑free.
