Devon based brand Finisterre was started in 2003 by founder Tom Kay with the goal of meeting the needs of hardy British surfers, and has now expanded to cover most outdoor needs.

With a focus on sustainability and functionality, the brand became the first outdoor clothing brand to earn a B Corp certification in 2018.

I tested the Stormbird Waterproof Jacket during some unfavourable summer showers, here’s how it held up.

  • Weight: 629g
  • Waterproof Rating: 20,000mm
  • Breathability Rating: 15,000g/m²
  • Intended Use: Hiking, walking, coastal trekking, everyday wear, multi-day treks
  • RRP: £250.00

Fit and Comfort

Straight away I really liked the look of the Stormbird jacket. The fit felt just right, shaped enough to look flattering without being tight, and roomy enough to layer a fleece or chunky jumper underneath. It's slightly heavier than other models – 629g for a size ten – however that took nothing away from the comfort of this jacket.

The ergonomic angled elbows make a real difference on long walks, allowing me to swing my arms naturally without that stiff, “boxy” feeling you sometimes get with waterproof shells. The microfleece-lined collar is a small touch but makes it so much more comfortable when it’s zipped right up against my chin on windy days. I also appreciate the adjustable hood, cuffs, and hem. I can cinch everything in when the weather turns nasty or loosen it for a bit more airflow.

Even after hours of wear, it doesn’t feel heavy or restrictive, and that balance of movement and protection means I’m happy to keep it on all day.

Waterproofing, Wind Protection and Breathability

The Stormbird has a 20,000mm hydrostatic head (HH) rating, meaning the fabric can withstand the pressure of a 20 metre high column of water before it starts to leak through, which is a very high level of waterproofness.

I wore this jacket multiple times in heavy rain, and I stayed completely dry. The curved bottom meant that my lower back and legs were also protected from the elements and its 3-layer recycled fabric and fully taped seams give it serious waterproofing which means I can walk for hours in a downpour without a single leak creeping in. The two-way waterproof zips keeps rain from sneaking through the front or into the pockets, and the adjustable hood stays put even in strong gusts, so I’m not constantly fiddling with it.

Wind protection is equally impressive. On blustery hilltops, the jacket feels like a proper shield, cutting the chill and keeping me warm without needing to pile on too many extra layers. Despite this, it doesn’t feel clammy inside. Even on uphill climbs, the breathable fabric allows enough airflow to stop that uncomfortable build-up of heat and condensation. It’s a rare combination of keeping the elements out while still letting me breathe,  and that’s exactly what I want from a jacket I can rely on year-round.

Practical Features

One of the things I like most about the Stormbird is that its features feel genuinely useful rather than overcomplicated. The adjustable hood has a stiffened peak that keeps rain out of my eyes without blocking my view, which is something I’ve found irritating with past jackets. The two large, zipped hand pockets are positioned high enough to use while wearing a rucksack hip belt, and they’re roomy enough for gloves, a map, or even my phone without feeling bulky. Inside, there’s a secure chest pocket which is perfect for keeping essentials dry.

The Finisterre Women's Stormbird Waterproof Jacket is made from 100% recycled materials.

Durability

The Stormbird jacket is made from 100% recycled polyamide and this jacket really feels like it’s going to be my go-to raincoat for a very long time.

The 3-layer recycled fabric has a tough, slightly textured finish that shrugs off scuffs from brambles and rough stone walls, and after several muddy walks and a couple of scrapes against gate latches, it still looks as good as new. The seams are solidly taped, and the zips feel sturdy and smooth with no snagging or signs of strain, even after repeated use in wet, gritty conditions.

I’ve worn it in everything from light showers to abrasive coastal downpours, and it hasn’t shown any signs of wearing thin or losing its waterproof coating. Knowing it’s built with longevity in mind, and backed by Finisterre’s repair service, gives me extra confidence that this is a jacket I’ll be able to rely on for many seasons, not just a single year. It’s the kind of piece that earns its place on the hook by the door, ready for whatever the countryside throws my way.

You can also machine wash it at 30 degrees, and tumble dry it on a low heat.

Value for Money

At £250.00 this is undeniably an expensive purchase, if not at the top range waterproof jackets can get to. However, for the advanced technology, appearance, incredible functionality, and sustainability this is worth the high cost.

Sustainability

The Stormbird is made from 100% recycled polyamide, and the waterproofing is free of harsh fluorocarbon chemicals – toxic “forever chemicals” which can harm humans and the environment.

Finisterre also ships all its products to its warehouse by land and sea, using less carbon-intensive journeys and avoiding air freight wherever possible.

The brand also became the first outdoor clothing brand to earn a B Corp certification in 2018.

Should You Buy It

If you can afford the hefty price tag this jacket will be the only one you’ll need all year round for a long time.
