Our rating:
Capacity
Weight and Packability
I’ve tried all sorts of water bottles over the years–stainless steel, collapsible, insulated, you name it–but I always seem to come back to the classic Nalgene. It might not be the flashiest bit of kit, but it’s earned a permanent place in my pack and travelled the world with me over the last ten years. Whether I’m on a multi–day hike or just heading out for the day, this bottle has proven itself time and time again.
I’ve also got a wide mouth model which fits most filtration devices for clean water, and fits ice cubes.
Capacity
The Narrow Mouth Sustain water bottle holds 32 fluid ounces, or a litre of water, which is enough to keep you hydrated without constant refills, but not too bulky to be annoying to carry. For longer treks or in hotter climates I’ll usually have another bottle (another Nalgene), but as a stand alone it’s a solid everyday choice.

Weight and Packability
At 8.25 inches tall, 177.25 grams and 3.5 inches wide, the Narrow Mouth Sustain bottle fits perfectly in my hands, and in all my bags. It’s wider and shorter than some other water bottles on the market, which I like because it fits in the side pocket of backpacks better than some taller versions, and has never fallen out.
Materials and Durability
While mine is an older version, all new models are now made with materials derived from 50% plastic waste that was destined for landfills, and all Nalgene bottles are BPA/BPS free (chemicals in plastics that can be harmful).
It’s the durability of the Nalgene bottles that really makes them stand out, and I have really put mine through its paces. It’s survived being dropped down mountains, freezing cold temperatures, extreme heat, sea salt and generally rattling around in my backpack for nearly a decade, and apart from a few scrapes and scuffs, it’s held up amazingly well. I have used the handle of my pack, carried it by the handle and twisted it around many times and the plastic shows no signs of weakening.
The Nalgene bottles also have a leak proof guarantee due to continuous, straight shouldered semi-buttress threads to keep the bottle sealed tight, and I can safely say I have never had a leak with mine.

Value for money
For around £17.00, you really cannot get a more durable water bottle than this that you don't need to be precious about, and will last you for years.
Sustainability
In a clear commitment to sustainability, the Nalgene Narrow Mouth Sustain water bottle is made from 50% recycled materials and BPA/BPS-free plastic. That means fewer fossil fuels, less waste, and a step toward circular production.
Should You Buy It?
Definitely. If you're looking for a reasonably priced, high end water bottle that you'll have for life.
