Mountains will greet you everywhere you look in Zell am See-Kaprun, so it’s no surprise hiking is one of the town’s biggest draws.

If you’re not sure where to start, the official digital hiking tour map will show you 52 hikes along with their level of difficulty, length, altitude and walking time.

Those after a challenge can trek 21km across the Schützingalm and the Hundstein with an impressive 1,600 metres difference in altitude. For something more relaxed and family-friendly, the Maiskogel mountain offers easily accessible tours.

Both cycling enthusiasts and casual bikers should definitely consider exploring Zell am See-Kaprun on two wheels. The town is a magnet for cyclists thanks to its beautiful biking trails.

Choose from 240 kilometres of designated routes from simple terrain, gentle mountain routes or challenging trails in the high alpine region, including a connection to the 2,000km-long Upper Tauern cycle path network.

Cycling around Lake Zell is a must too – it’s an easy ride with some of the most cinematic views around. You can also enjoy longer tours or ascents with the help of an e-bike.

Lake Zell is one of Zell am See-Kaprun’s biggest attractions. If you visit in summer, you’ll want to jump into the crystal-clear lake, which has a few swimming areas. Once you’ve had a swim, soak up the sun in one of the surrounding loungers.

For something a little more active, you can always try your hand at the many water sports available. Surfing, stand-up paddling and canyoning are just some of the activities you can enjoy in the region, as well as fishing and sailing if you’re after something more relaxing.

Now this might seem like a strange addition, but Zell am See-Kaprun does also have a superb selection of sky-high activities – paragliding and parachuting, in particular, will offer you unparalleled views of the area’s breathtaking alpine landscapes.

If the idea of flying solo doesn’t appeal to you, but you still want bird’s eye views of the Salzburg Alps, a hot air balloon is the answer. Both competitive and public hot air balloon flights are popular in the area, and there is a whole festival dedicated to them in February.
