In the spring months, hares become more energised and will let off steam, sparring with competitors in the fight for a prospective mate.

Why do hares box?

But it's not just males who fight one another. The female (doe) will fight a prospective mate if he approaches her too soon – or if she wants to test their strength or suitability for mating.

The visual spectacle of boxing hares usually takes place in February and March, but has been known to take place all through spring and summer.

You might be surprised to hear that this extravagant display is where the phrase "mad as a March hare" actually comes from!
