Jim the border collie has been announced as the winner of this year’s Holyrood Dog of the Year, a competition hosted by The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust.

Jim was entered with MSP Jenni Minto, Scottish National Party MSP for Argyll and Bute, beating 12 opponents to take home the top prize.

Jim is said to be a "failed sheepdog", raised to be a herding dog but didn't make the grade – and is now a loving family dog.

Border collies are often used in farm work and sheep herding, due to the fact that they are highly intelligent dogs with lots of energy. As a result, they are a good dog choice for people with active lifestyles, as they are a dog breed that needs a lot of exercise.

Now in its seventh year, Holyrood Dog of the Year was created to celebrate the role of dogs as family members and to raise awareness on welfare issues surrounding dogs.

Leading the opposition in second place was Kura San, a flat-coated retriever owned by Tess White, Scottish Conservative Party MSP for North East Scotland, while third place was awarded to Buster, a Dogs Trust rescue dog, accompanied by Jamie Halcro Johnston, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party MSP for Highlands and Islands.
