The Jack Russell Terrier, a favourite of Queen Camilla, has experienced a spectacular start to 2025, with new data from The Kennel Club showing a significant rise in the breed's popularity.

According to the latest figures, puppy registrations for the breed have surged by a remarkable 75% in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2024.

This rise in numbers echoes the cyclical popularity of the royal Corgi, which often saw waves of interest in line with Queen Elizabeth II's own affection for the breed.

Now, the Jack Russell Terrier is enjoying its moment in the spotlight, with a steady increase in numbers over the past few years. Between 2021 and 2022, the breed’s registrations grew by 14%, coinciding with the ascension of HRH King Charles III. Earlier this year, Queen Camilla welcomed Moley, a new Jack Russell addition to the royal household, joining Bluebell, who has been by her side since 2011.

Another beloved British breed, the Cocker Spaniel, has also secured its place in both the royal family and the nation’s hearts. According to Kennel Club data, the Cocker Spaniel ranked as the second most popular breed in 2024, and it’s held onto that spot in the first quarter of 2025.

This breed’s rise mirrors its long-standing popularity in the UK, where it has remained in the top ten for many decades. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s own Cocker Spaniel, Orla, recently made headlines with the birth of a litter of four puppies.

Cocker Spaniels were the nation’s top breed between 1935 and 1953, and since 2016, they’ve consistently been the third most popular breed in the UK. Last year, they moved up to second place, closing the gap on the UK’s number one dog, the Labrador Retriever.

Charlotte McNamara, spokesperson for The Kennel Club, spoke on the rise of both breeds: "The Jack Russell Terrier and the Cocker Spaniel are iconic British breeds that make wonderful companions, so it’s no surprise that both have the royal seal of approval."

"With their lively personalities and love of activity, they fit perfectly into the busy lives of royal families, where meeting new people is a constant. However, it's important for any potential owner to thoroughly research which breed is the best fit for their lifestyle and be prepared for the responsibilities of dog ownership. The UK is fortunate to have such a wide variety of dog breeds, so we encourage people to take the time to find their perfect match."
