In May, spring flowers are abundant in the northern hemisphere – so it’s no surprise that May's full moon takes its name from this dazzling floral display.
But you might also know it by a few other names, including the Hare Moon, Milk Moon, Mothers’ Moon and Corn Planting Moon.
When is the Flower Moon?
The Flower Moon is the full moon that occurs in May each year. This year's full Flower Moon will appear on 12 May 2025.
Why is it called the Flower Moon?
The name ‘Flower Moon’ originates from the Native American people, who celebrated the abundance of blooming flowers at this time of the year, signalling the start of spring.
In his book (and the subsequent Oscar-winning film) Killers of the Flower Moon, author David Gran wrote that the Osage Nation called it the "flower-killing moon" because the wildflowers covering the prairies in April began to die off in May.
Where is the best place to see the Flower Moon?
As is the case with seeing any full moon, the best places to see the Flower Moon are darker, more remote areas with lower levels of light pollution and clearer skies free from tall buildings. Rural areas are obviously best for this.
