Our testing process

To get a real feel for how each pair performs, I wore them across different types of terrain: woodland trails, rocky hills, gravel paths, and muddy sections after rain. I looked at comfort straight out of the box, how the boots handled long distances, and whether they caused any pressure points or blisters. I also paid close attention to grip, flexibility, ankle support, and how breathable they felt in warmer weather. Some boots I wore with a pack to test stability under load, and I kept track of how each pair held up over repeated use. Durability, waterproofing, and ease of cleaning all played a part in my overall assessment.

Best lightweight walking boots of 2025

Best overall

Scarpa Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX on a log

Scarpa Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX

  • Weight: 357 grams (1/2 pair size 5)
  • Uppers: PFC-free nubuck leather (1.6–1.8 mm) paired with breathable mesh and a TPU heel frame for added structure and support
  • Midsole: EVA with two density areas to absorb impact
  • Outsole: Scarpa’s own PRESA HIK‑03 compound with IKS tech designed to deliver progressive cushioning and reliable grip across mixed terrain
  • RRP: £200.00

Three Things To Know:

  • They feel more like trail shoes than boots – super light, flexible, and great for fast hiking, but don’t expect strong ankle support
  • Comfort is a standout – no break-in period needed, and they stayed comfy all day, even on rocky, uneven ground
  • They grip really well – the outsole handled loose gravel, wet forest paths, and mud with ease, giving me confidence on varied terrain

I was immediately impressed with how lightweight these boots are at only 375 grams per shoe. The Scarpa Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX felt snug but not too restrictive, wrapping around my feet rather than stifling them.

These are a women's specific fit, and the heel hold was especially noticeable, keeping everything in place on steep descents. I found the ankle support enough for me, but with the slightly lower collar on these boots, if you do require sturdy ankle support I would recommend trying these on before buying them. Best for ankle support

AKU Ultralight Original GTX walking boots

AKU Ultralight Original GTX

  • Weight: 420 grams (1/2 pair size 5)
  • Uppers: Suede 1.4 mm/air 8000
  • Midsole: Double density die cut EVA
  • Outsole: Vibram Erica Everest
  • RRP: £205.00

Three Things To Know:

  • Lightweight comfort and solid support - ideal for day hikes and longer walks
  • GORE-TEX lining - keeps feet dry in wet conditions without sacrificing breathability
  • Suede materials - high quality however not great for winter

I love the way the Ultralight’s look, preferring a more traditional style myself, and straight out of the box they were reassuringly solid but not stiff. The lasting board is a stiff component often made of plastic or composite material which sits between the insole and the midsole, adding support and cushioning against uneven surfaces – and the lasting boot in these shoes is 4-2 mm texon + tpu and extra flexible.

The ankle collar provides enough structure to support light backpacking or uneven terrain, but it’s not rigid or restrictive. It’s well-padded and allows for a natural range of motion. Reviewed by Leonie Helm

What we liked

  • Ultra-lightweight
  • Look good
  • Good ankle support
  • Comfortable
  • Flexible

Things to consider

  • Expensive
  • Suede can absorb water and stain easily
  • Only three season

Our verdict: If you can afford the price and are looking for a reliable and stylish three season boot.

Get this if...you want a more traditional boot with great ankle support.

  • Uppers: Lightweight Air-Mesh fabric with PFC-free DWR treatment for breathability and water resistance
  • Midsole: EVA foam high-stack midsole designed for cushioning and shock absorption—ideal for mixed terrain

Three Things To Know:

  • Incredibly light weight - can work as trail running shoes
  • GORE-TEX lining - keeps feet dry but is also breathable
  • Suitable for mountain training - with reliable grip and just enough ankle support

Right out of the box, these felt different. They’re sleek, flexible, and felt more like a trail runner than a traditional hiking boot and are great for fast hiking. After wearing them on a few damp, rocky trails, I had a pretty clear sense of how they hold up, and I was pleasantly surprised.

From the first time I laced them up, the Sertig II Mid GTX felt more like a cushioned running shoe than a hiking boot, which was exactly what I was hoping for. The fit is snug but not tight, with just enough room in the toe box to avoid pressure on descents. I didn’t have to break them in; they were comfortable on day one. Reviewed by Leonie Helm

What we liked

Walking boots buyer’s guide: how to choose the right pair for your walks

Walking boots walking shoes: which is better for you?

Walking boots usually provide better support, protection, and durability compared to walking shoes. The higher ankle coverage helps prevent sprains and offers extra stability on uneven or rocky terrain. Boots typically have tougher soles with stronger grip, which means they handle mud, loose gravel, and slippery surfaces more confidently. They also tend to be more waterproof, keeping your feet dry in wet conditions. While walking shoes can be lighter and more flexible, boots are often the safer, more comfortable choice for longer hikes or rough trails.

What features should you look for in walking boots?

  • Ankle support – crucial for stability on uneven or steep terrain
  • Waterproofing – Gore‑Tex or similar membranes keep feet dry
  • Durable outsole – deep lugs for grip on mud, rock, and loose ground
  • Cushioning and shock absorption – for comfort on long hikes
  • Breathability – helps regulate temperature and reduce sweat
  • Toe protection – reinforced toe caps guard against bumps and rocks
  • Supportive midsole – for load-bearing and long-distance comfort
  • Good fit – snug heel, roomy toe box, and secure lacing
  • Break-in friendly materials – like soft leather or flexible synthetics
  • Weight – lightweight boots reduce fatigue without sacrificing support

How should my walking boots fit?

When I first got into hiking, I didn’t realise how important the right fit was for walking boots. For me, a good fit means a snug heel that doesn’t slip, but enough room in the toe box so my toes can wiggle comfortably – especially when going downhill. I always try boots on with the socks I plan to wear on the trail, because that extra thickness makes a difference. There shouldn’t be any tight spots or pressure points, but also no excess looseness that causes rubbing. A well-fitted boot makes all the difference in avoiding blisters and staying comfortable all day.

Do I need to break in my new walking boots?

I always make sure to break in my walking boots before heading out on a long hike. Even if they feel great when I first try them on, wearing them for short walks around the neighbourhood or on gentle trails helps the materials soften and mould to my feet. This prevents blisters, hot spots, and general discomfort. Leather boots especially need some time to loosen up, but even lightweight synthetic ones benefit from it. I’ve learned the hard way that skipping this step can really ruin a day outdoors. A proper break-in makes all the difference in comfort and confidence.

How do I maintain my walking boots?

After every hike, I make sure to clean my hiking boots by brushing off dirt and mud with a soft brush or damp cloth. I never use harsh chemicals or soap, and I always let them dry naturally – away from direct heat like radiators or sunlight – to prevent the materials from cracking or warping. Waterproofing is key, so I regularly apply a suitable waterproof spray or wax depending on the boot’s material. This keeps my boots water-resistant and helps them breathe. Taking these simple steps not only extends the life of my boots but also keeps my feet comfortable and dry on every adventure.

Should I choose a leather or synthetic boot?

Choosing between leather and synthetic walking boots really depends on what kind of hiking you plan to do and your personal preferences. I’ve found leather boots are super durable and great for tough, rugged trails – they mould to your feet over time and offer fantastic support and water resistance. On the other hand, synthetic boots are lighter and dry faster, which is great if you want something breathable and easier to break in. For me, it’s a trade-off between durability and weight. If I’m tackling rough terrain or longer trips, I usually go leather. But for casual hikes, synthetics work just fine.
