No chaos, just chill: These 6 dog breeds are perfect for first-time pet owners

From easy-going companions to highly trainable favourites, these six breeds are ideal for beginners – as chosen by a vet nurse

Taking on a pet dog is a big commitment, so it’s worth doing your research first to find the right dog for you. While it’s tempting to follow the trends, it’s best to find a dog that suits your personality, activity levels, fits your lifestyle and be happy in your home.

Butternut Box’s vet nurse, Leah Callaghan, has put together a list of the best dog breeds for first-time owners, that will be a perfect pal that won’t overwhelm new owners.

Best dog breeds for first-time pet owners

Cavaliers are a great choice for first-time pet owners, as they were bred to be lap dogs and companions, so they’re a particularly loving breed. Plus, they don’t require the constant exercise and mental stimulation of a working breed, so they can provide companionship without the high energy levels.

Cavalier King Charles spaniels are great on long walks, but they’re also happier with shorter outings – and love to curl up on the sofa. When it comes to training, they’re easier to teach than other breeds, as they have good recall and respond well to positive reinforcement.

Labrador retriever

A young Labrador retriever is happy, loving and eager to please – but it’s worth keeping an eye on Labradors’ strong desire to eat, as their love of food can lead to scavenging, naughty behaviour and weight gain. Labradors are currently the most popular dog breed in the UK.

Like Labradors, golden retrievers are highly social animals, so are great to bring into a family. They bond with their owners early on, leading to a fulfilling pet-human partnership.

Miniature schnauzer

For those with less space, miniature schnauzers are a great choice for first-time dog owners thanks to their diminutive size. They have a great mix of intelligence, enthusiasm and spirited nature, and they respond well to consistent training. Schnauzers are great companion dogs that enjoy a strong bond with their owners. But it’s worth keeping an eye on their lively terrier streak – make sure they get plenty of regular mental stimulation and physical exercise.

Poodle

Poodles are one of the most trainable and versatile dog breeds, famed for their intelligence and quick thinking. They respond well to gentle and consistent training, and can learn obedience and agility with ease. Plus, they are a low-shedding dog, so are a great option for anyone with allergies or with less time to vaccuum up dog hair!

Cocker spaniel

One of the most common dog breeds, cocker spaniels are popular with first-time dog owners for a reason, thanks to their sensitivity, intelligence and eagerness to please. Like poodles, spaniels respond well to gentle, consistent training, and they enjoy being part of a family.
