With more than half of all UK households owning a pet of some kind, we’re a nation of animal lovers – but what impact is that having on our wallets? A new study by credit card brand Aqua has examined the UK dog market to compare the costs of man’s best friend over the course of their lifetime.
Aqua has compared purchase prices of the animals alongside ongoing expenses such as insurance, vaccinations, grooming and food.
The study compared 2026 prices to 2024 prices, analysing the costs involved in keeping the UK's most popular dog breeds. The cost of buying pets has increased exponentially during this time, with the price of miniature dachshund puppies having risen by 50% from £963 to £1,450.
The cost of keeping pets over this two-year period has also increased significantly, with a surge in veterinary costs and grooming expenses.
The study found that Dobermans are the most expensive dog to own in the UK, costing their owners an average of £22,976 over their 11.5-year lifetime. This is primarily down to their increased food consumption, costing around £496 a year, and the high insurance premiums they carry due to their hereditary health risks.
The French bulldog came in a close second, largely due to high insurance costs. This is due to common breathing disorders and other health conditions. They have much lower grooming needs than other dogs, however, which saves owners costs in this area.
