When packing light for a trip where I want to do a little bit of everything, I’m always on the lookout for a versatile pair of shoes. So when the Merrell Agility Peak 6 turned up, I was thrilled.
They’re trail runners by design – but at just under 500g a pair, they’re also well suited to thru-hikes. They’re some of the most stylish trail shoes I’ve seen, making them great for the occasional walk or run through cities and towns. And, if you opt for the GORE-TEX versions, they’re also suited to any weather… for the most part.
The waterproofing is outstanding. I’ve literally waded through puddles in these and taken thousands of steps in heavy rain, and my socks have never become the slightest bit damp. They’re the kinds of trainers that make you want to go out in the rain. They have a lightweight mesh upper that’s also durable – sharp rocks and thorns wouldn’t stand a chance.
But if it’s not raining… let’s just say when you kick them off at the end of your run, you’ll want an airy space to store them in. Despite the GORE-TEX pores, the Agility Peak 6s don’t feel remotely breathable. Heat isn’t an issue, but internal moisture is. It’s surprising given their composition. They’re not cheap, so it’s worth considering opting out of the waterproofing to save some cash – it might also help your shoes ventilate better.
On top of this, after several days on the trails, the wear on the TPU overlay noticeably started to take its toll. With some significant abrasion and the layer even peeling away from the body of the shoe, I was surprised the waterproofing wasn’t compromised. Even so, it’s a bit of a cosmetic eyesore.
All this said, I was impressed with the traction of the Agility 6s, particularly when moving on smooth, wet rocks – and their impact resistance when treading on sharper rocks. They did a decent job of cushioning my ankles and arches, though if you’re looking for trail runners for thru-hikes you might want something sturdier.
In terms of fit, they feel true to size and didn’t cause any blisters or sore spots. I have wider feet so that’s always a win in my eyes.
They’re light, they’re flexible and they’re a good all-rounder. They’re not the cheapest option out there, but worth it for anyone set on not getting their feet wet.
