Here’s how to make a nestbox in four easy steps.
Step 1
Mark up a wooden plank as shown, cut into pieces and drill a hole in the front section – 25-30mm diameter for blue or great tits. The plank should be at least 15mm thick.

Step 2
Nail or screw the bottom, front, back and sides together. To help the lid nestle into the box, you could chisel out a groove from the backpiece.

Step 3
Make a waterproof hinge for the lid from butyl rubber, roofing felt or a piece of bicycle inner tube. Cut to width of box, nail first to lid then to the back.

Step 4
Site the box at least 3m from the ground away from strong sunlight, prevailing wind and rain. Place away from feeders to avoid disturbance.
