Ariat Kelmarsh Rubber Boot: basics

American country and equestrian brand Ariat specialise in tough footwear designed to take on yard work and long days in the saddle. If you don’t fancy a pair of their popular cowboy boots, try Ariat’s rather modern-looking Kelmarsh, a practical welly in a classic shape that’s non-insulated, so seems aimed at yard work in milder weather. A mid and a short version of the Kelmarsh are also available.

First impressions

The Kelmarsh looks like many similar tall, non-insulated rubber boots on the marker but definitely feels more solid and sturdy when tried on, and seem like a durable option at first glance. Inside the boot is like a treat for the feet thanks to a soft jersey lining and thick, bouncy insoles – comfort that’s lacking in most basic tall rubber boots.

Fit

On the whole, we were impressed with the fit of the Kelmarsh – this boot fits true to size has a nice width that should suit most calf sizes. While you can also adjust the calf size with a strap, we found that this constantly came undone over the course of a day. Where these boots stand out is for the amount of cushioning offered by their thick and sumptuously soft insoles, which feel bouncy and light underfoot hour after hour. The Kelmarsh is also easy to pull on and off and unlike most welly brands, Ariat also offer half sizes.

Are they grippy?

On the whole the Ariat Kelmarsh offers good grip – we found we didn’t slip and slide on trails and while walking through open fields in these boots. The tread is shallow, however, so it can fill with mud in wet conditions, suddenly making the boots far less grippy if you don’t keep them clean.

Suitable for...

If casual comfort is top of your shopping list, Ariat’s Kelmarsh might be your new favourite footwear – a good choice for getting outdoors in autumn and spring.
