When the weather turns wet, a reliable pair of the best waterproof trousers can make the difference between a miserable slog and an enjoyable adventure. Whether you’re hiking through misty hills, cycling to work in the rain, or tackling an all-day downpour on the trail, waterproof trousers are essential for staying dry, comfortable, and focused. But not all rain gear is created equal – differences in materials, fit, and breathability can have a huge impact on performance.
Swiss brand Mammut has made a reputation for producing high quality outdoor equipment since 1862, and I was interested to see how the Haldigrat Light HS trousers held up in the elements.

Design and Fit
When I first tried on the Haldigrat Light HS trousers, I immediately noticed how well they balance technical performance with comfort. The regular ski fit gives me plenty of mobility without feeling bulky, and the wide, adjustable waistband lets me layer comfortably while staying secure. I appreciated the pre-shaped knees and adjustable leg width, which made moving on steep terrain and fitting over my boots effortless. The side ventilation zippers were a lifesaver on warmer days, and the snow gaiters with anti-slip grip will be sure to keep my legs dry in deep snow.
The water-repellent leg pockets, especially the one with the neoprene insert for my phone, were surprisingly practical, letting me carry essentials safely without worrying about the weather. Overall, these pants feel thoughtfully designed for serious mountain adventures.

Waterproofing and Breathability
I’ve been really impressed with how the Haldigrat Light HS Pants handle wet conditions, with a water column measurement of 30,000mm – meaning the fabric can withstand a column of water 30 metres high pressing down on it before water starts to leak through, which is a very high rating.
Thanks to the Mammut DRY Expedition laminate, they kept me completely dry during heavy rain and snow, yet never felt stuffy. The breathability is excellent, with a rating of 30,000 g/m²/24h – this means that 30 kilograms of moisture per square meter can pass through in 24 hours. This meant that when I was hiking – my legs didn’t overheat even during steep climbs or high-intensity activity. I also appreciate the PFC-free DWR treatment, which gives reliable water resistance without using harsh chemicals. Overall, these pants strike a perfect balance between staying dry and staying comfortable, making them my go-to choice for unpredictable alpine weather.
Durability and Build Quality
I’m really impressed with their durability for such a lightweight shell. The fabric feels tough and has resisted scuffs from rocks, branches, and boot buckles better than I expected. The seams and zippers are all holding up perfectly, and nothing feels flimsy or cheaply made.
That said, you can tell these are built for movement and weight savings, not for constant abrasion against rock – so I’m careful when scrambling. Overall, the build quality feels premium and confidence-inspiring, especially considering how light and packable they are.
I’m looking forward to testing these throughout the winter and I’ll date this article with more information as I do.

Practical Features
One of the things I really appreciate about the Mammut Haldigrat Light HS Pants Women is how thoughtfully packed they are with practical features. The adjustable waistband makes it easy to get a snug fit without adding bulk, and the leg pockets are perfectly sized for snacks, maps, or my phone – which even has its own neoprene-lined pocket to keep it warm. I love the pre-shaped knees and side ventilation zippers, which make long climbs and turns effortless without overheating. The integrated snow gaiters and boot-width snaps keep mud and rain out and boots secure, making these pants genuinely easy to live in outdoors. Every detail just feels designed for real-world use, not just for looking good on the shelf.
Value for Money
While on the higher end, the combination of features and sustainability may justify the investment for serious outdoor enthusiasts.
Sustainability
These pants are bluesign® approved, feature PFC-free DWR treatment, and are made with recycled materials, reflecting Mammut's commitment to environmental responsibility.
Should You Buy It?
If you're an avid skier or mountaineer seeking a lightweight, durable, and eco-friendly trouser, the Mammut Haldigrat Light HS Pants are a worthy consideration. However, if you frequently navigate rugged terrains with sharp objects, you might want to explore more abrasion-resistant options.
