The dog poo problem: should dogs be banned from beauty spots?

Bags of dog faeces left in the countryside across Britain are angering locals and leading to discussions over what can be done to combat irresponsible pet owners.

Recent reports of nearly 50 bags of mess left in White Moss Woods, a small beauty spot in the Lake District, have led to calls for more bins to be installed, for bigger fines to be introduced for irresponsible pet owners and even for dogs to be completely banned from national parks and Areas Of Natural Beauty.

Dogs are already banned on some beaches in the UK, including on the main beaches of St Ives during the summer months. More than 70 Nottinghamshire parks also issued a ban on dogs in 2010.
