Often referred to as the 'people's princess', the late Princess Diana was one of the most influential royals in the 20th century.

Her activism, charitable work and style made her a global icon. But there are many things you likely didn't know about Diana, either.

Princess Diana facts

1. As a child, she had a pet guinea pig called Peanuts, who won two pets shows and who came with her to boarding school.

      2. She also owned a Shetland pony named Soufflé, which was kept at her mother and stepfather's house on the Isle of Seil.

      3. Diana was laid to rest in the grounds of her childhood home, Althorp.

      4. She is related to Winston Churchill through their relative Anne Churchill, who was the second daughter of the John and Sarah Churchill (the 1st Duke and Duchess of Marlborough).

      5. She is descended from two illegitimate children of King Charles II: Henry Fitzroy and Charles Lennox.

      6. Diana and Sarah Ferguson were almost arrested for impersonating police officers after dressing up for Sarah's hen do.

      7. Her maternal grandmother was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

      8. Diana grew up on the Sandringham estate in Park House, which is owned by the Royal Family.

      9. When she married Prince Charles, Diana was the first British royal bride to have had a paying job having worked as a nanny.

      10. She was also the first British royal to give birth in a hospital, rather than at home.

      14. Diana gave her son William the nickname 'Wombat' after a trip to Australia, where they saw the creature.
