First impressions

The Haglöfs jacket was noticeably slimmer and less voluminous than others on test, which is primarily down to it having synthetic insulation instead of animal down inside. At the expense of cosiness and lightweight warmth though, comes the fact that it’s vegan-friendly and also is more forgiving to being saturated.

The jacket felt impressively light though and packs down very easily into an inner stuff pocket – perfect if space it as at a premium on your outdoor adventures.

Black down jacket

How was the fit?

We were sent a medium to trial for this review and it was quite snug. Ok with a t-shirt underneath but too small with a jumper/fleece under – so it depends how you are using it as part of a layering system. Check the size guide carefully, as with any jacket, when ordering and maybe size up if between sizes as we were.

The shape of the jacket is nice though and the length of the sleeves good.

How does it feel?

Perhaps due to sizing this was a close-fitting jacket but also due to the light weight and compressed nature of it being synthetic down, we found it was very slim fitting so easily packed under a waterproof jacket. This also made it easy to move in, though we’d have welcomed a 2-way zip. There is an inner flap under the zip and zip garage at the top.

Does it have a hood and is it any good?

Yes, an insulated hood is included and when zipped up it sat nicely around the face. There are no ways of adjusting the hood but as it is again quite slim, a helmet would fit easily on top.

What’s it made of?

The facing fabric is 100% recycled polyamide which is 10 Denier and coated in PFAS(PFC)-free DWR for waterproofing. This worked well, with light showers simply beading and running off the jacket.

What’s it filled with?

Recycled polyester, light, lofty, synthetic fibre cluster insulation with a down-like feel. Sewed over design.

How durable is it?

Jackets with synthetic fill and arguably more durable than those with down fill as they are more able to cope with getting saturated as there are no feathers to clump together. They generally dry more quickly too and thanks to being less bulky are less likely to snag on rocks and branches. We didn’t have any concerns in testing, though we would have liked it if a repair patch had been included as the fabric is quite an unusual colour.

How sustainable is it?

Haglöfs have used 100% recycled material for the facing and insulation, plus this jacket is animal-free which will be a huge plus point for those concerned about welfare in the down industry. Online, Haglöfs have their manifesto around environment and sustainability as well as a modern slavery statement. There is an online guide for product care info.

Is it good value?

This is a nice jacket and good as a mid layer or option for dry days. For the RRP though, we would likely look for something with a little more winter warmth – if using real down is an option for you as a consumer.

Best used for:

Hikes where you want a warm jacket without bulk that can be easily stashed.
