Guy Ritchie is returning to Sherlock Holmes’ story with a new adaptation – and this time, we follow the detective in his teenage years during his first case.
Young Sherlock will be released on Prime Video on 4th March 2026, and it follows Sherlock’s adventures at Oxford University.
What is Young Sherlock about?
Young Sherlock is based on a book series written by Andy Lane. The TV series follows 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes at Oxford University, where he is only an amateur investigator. But a murder case at Oxford soon unravels into a globe-spanning conspiracy – and his detective skills are finally put to the test.
Who stars in Young Sherlock?
Hero Fiennes Tiffin stars as Sherlock Holmes, with Dónal Finn (who will also appear in the upcoming BBC series The Other Bennet Sister) as his future nemesis James Moriarty. Max Irons plays Mycroft Holmes, Natascha McElhone as their mother Cordelia Holmes and Joseph Fiennes as their father Silas Holmes.
Zine Tseng plays Gulun Shou’an (a princess, scholar and martial artist) and Colin Firth plays Bucephalus Hodge.
Where is Young Sherlock filmed?
Young Sherlock was primarily filmed across Bristol and South Wales in 2024, with other scenes shot in Spain.
Bristol
A large film crew was spotted around central Bristol, with specific locations including Broad Street, Small Street, Underfall Yard and Queen Square. The areas were transformed with market stalls and carts.

South Wales
Sets were built at Cardiff’s Great Point Studios, which served as a base for filming around South Wales. Other locations include Monmouth town centre and the Civic Centre in Cardiff.
Spain
The Spanish cities of Jerez, Cádiz and Seville were used for filming Young Sherlock scenes. Specific filming areas in Cádiz include Plaza de Argüelles, Plaza de Candelaria and Plaza de Mina, which were transformed with vintage signs and period details.
