The latest BBC Austen adaptation follows the often-ridiculed Bennet sister – Mary – as she navigates life after the events in Pride and Prejudice

Hold onto your bonnets, as the BBC has released a first look at its latest Austen adaptation The Other Bennet Sister.

The upcoming series follows the often-maligned Bennet sister from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice – Mary.

What is The Other Bennet Sister about?

Based on the book of the same name by Janice Hadlow, the 10-part series follows Mary through the events of Pride and Prejudice, later becoming a governess to her aunt and uncle Gardiner. In doing so, she leaves her quiet life in Meryton behind and starts to meet a wider circle of people in London: including new characters Mr Hayward, Mr Ryder and Ann Baxter.

Ella Bruccoleri (from Call the Midwife and Bridgerton) will star as the lead Mary Bennet. Richard E. Grant (who also starred in the Netflix adaptions of Persuasion and The Thursday Murder Club) and Ruth Jones will play iconic duo Mr and Mrs Bennet – making Ruth the second Gavin & Stacey star to play the nerve-riddled mother of five (after Alison Steadman played her in the Pride and Prejudice 1995 TV series). Indira Varma and Richard Coyle are set to play Mr and Mrs Gardiner.

Period drama lovers will recognise another face: Tanya Jackson, who played the pretentious Mrs Elton in the 2020 adaptation of Emma, will appear as Miss Bingley. The actors playing Mr Bingley and Mr Darcy have not been confirmed, although it's highly likely that they will feature in the series.
