A seemingly picture-perfect marriage descends into all-out war as a couple squabble over who gets to keep their beachside mansion in new film The Roses.
Loosely inspired by the 1989 black comedy The War of the Roses, the film stars Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as Ivy and Theo Rose. Cracks in their relationship soon form after the couple swap London life for the north Californian coast – but the movie actually used some stunning scenery in the UK for filming.
Where was The Roses filmed?
The Roses was primarily filmed in Devon in 2024.
Salcombe, Devon
The Roses was filmed in Salcombe, Devon, in June 2024. We named it one of the UK's most beautiful seaside towns, thanks to its colourful houses, sheltered harbour and long waterfront. Ivy's seafood bistro was filmed at the family-run cafe Winking Prawn, which is just above North Sands beach. The building was taken over with new branding for the film – and to mark its release, it will revert back to this branding for a few weeks.
Speaking to the BBC, director Jay Roach described Salcombe as a "dreamy little beach town" with "spectacular" light.
Filming also took place along Cliff Road: the road which links Salcombe's town centre with North and South Sands, and where the Winking Prawn is based.
Combe Martin, Devon
Exterior shots of Ivy and Theo's Californian beach house were actually filmed in Combe Martin, on the North Devon coast. Why not make a trip of it and follow our walk from Ilfracombe to Combe Martin on the South West Coast Path, which stops off at some of Devon's most beautiful beaches.
The interior of their home was built on a soundstage at Pinewood Studios – which is somewhat unsurprising, as things quickly descend into chaos, including a fresh take on that famous chandelier scene.
