As they are a herd animal it's probably little wonder the collective noun for a group of horses is herd, just like cows.

However, there are more unofficial names as well;

  • String can refer to a group of racehorses out on exercise or to a group of horses owned or ridden by one person.
  • A group of four horses or more pulling a carriage is often referred to a team of horses, while a pair of horses is sometimes referred to as a span.
  • A group of horses on a ranch waiting to be ridden is called a remuda.
  • A group of horses at a stud is called a harras.
  • The word troop of course is synonymous with royal occasions, like Trooping the Colour, but the word troop can refer to a group of cavalry officers and their horses, for example the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

What is a group of wild horses called?

While herd is appropriate here, too, other nouns to describe a group of wild horses include a band, harem, or mob.

What is a group of female horses called?

Again, in addition to herd, other collective nouns for a group of mares include stringrag, and team.

As collective nouns go there is no denying herd is a little boring compared to many others! Did you know a group of crows is called a murder? And how about a confusion of wildebeest? Much more interesting than a herd of horses...
