Recipe: Prunes wrapped in bacon with grainy mustard

The combination of hot, sweet, sticky prunes spiked with mustard and wrapped with crisp salty bacon is amazing. Serve these as sidekicks to the roast meat, on their own with some buttered brown toast and watercress as a light lunch or even, in their rightful place, as boisterous little canapés.

You will need:

  • Rashers of streaky bacon, smoked or unsmoked, rinds removed
  • Dried prunes, stones removed
  • Grainy mustard 
  •  

Method:

1. Preheat the grill. 

2. Slather each slice of bacon with about one teaspoon of grainy mustard and wrap the bacon around a prune. Secure each bacon-wrapped prune with a toothpick. 

3. Place the bacon-wrapped prunes in an even layer on a baking tray. Try to tuck any protruding bits of toothpick under the next bacon-wrapped prune to prevent it from catching under the grill.

4. Cook under a hot grill, turning once, until the bacon is crisp. Serve immediately.
