The turrets and spires of Craig y Nos Castle seem to spring up from nowhere as you drive along the

A4067 across the Brecon Beacons, rattling over cattle grids and dodging sheep.

Built in the 1840s, the castle’s name roughly translates as ‘rock of the night’, so named by Adelina Patti, the leading opera star of her day, who made the castle her home in 1878. Formerly a hospital, Craig y Nos is reputed to be the most haunted building in Britain and attracts paranormal enthusiasts from all over the world. It is now a hotel, but its derelict hospital halls and decadent Opera House still remain, said to be haunted by the ghosts of former patients and Patti herself. Thrill seekers can take part in the hotel’s ghost hunt nights and stay in the most haunted areas of the castle.

If encounters with the afterlife are too much, you can always walk the woodland, meadow and river trails that make up Craig y Nos Country Park.
