How to Build a Den
You can make a den quickly, or you can work on it over time and see how it changes through the seasons. Good dens are a labour of love and this simple design will get you and the children instantly excited.

Natalie Johnson of the Wild Network explains how to do it.
1. The best base for a den is a tree with a low branch or two. This will create the main beam your new dwelling.
2. Gather as many long sticks as you can, then start lining them up along your base each side of your main branch – this will create a triangular shape.
3. Collect smaller branches and fill in any gaps with these twigs. You should now have quite a solid structure.
4. Gradully add leaf debris to the outside. Evergreen foliage and bracken work well, and mud blocks up holes. Use dry leaves to make a soft floor for the den.
