Known also as the Thunder or Hay Moon, July's Buck Moon is typically the first full moon after the summer solstice – signalling a shift in seasons and the height of the hot, summer months in the northern hemisphere.
When is the Buck Moon?
This year's full Buck Moon will appear on 10 July 2025.
Why is it called the Buck Moon?
As with most full moon names, the Buck Moon's name was devised by the Native Americans. The 'buck' refers to the male deer, whose antlers start to regrow in July.
The July full moon is also known as the Thunder Moon, due to the fact that the summer often brings storms.
Anglo-Saxons referred to the July full moon as the Hay Moon, because this was the time of year they began harvesting their crop.
