The Devil’s Stone Inn, Beaworthy, Devon

This 400-year-old former fishing pub in Beaworthy got its name from a mammoth-sized rock located in the village, said to have fallen from the pocket of the Devil himself, during his fall from heaven to hell. Weird activity within its stone walls include strange noises and taps that turn themselves on. To make your stay even more unnerving, the inn is said to be attached to the local church by a hidden tunnel. www.devilsstoneinn.co.uk

The Hyde Tavern, Winchester, Hampshire

Believed to be the oldest pub in Britain, you can expect quite a stay should you be brave enough to spend the night at the Hyde Tavern in Winchester. Its resident ghost is a meddlesome minx, who pulls the bedclothes off sleeping guests! It is believed the female ghost that haunts its halls reportedly died from cold and hunger many centuries ago. www.hydetavern.co.uk

The Ancient Ram Inn, Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire

Currently closed following the death of the owner John Humphries in 2017, the Ancient Ram Inn is the oldest building in Wotton-under-Edge and known as the pub in which no wants to be left alone. Dating from the 12th century, this ancient pub is not your average spooky drinking hole. This one comes with tales of murder, Satanism and even child sacrifice. Inexplicably freezing temperatures and so-called evil atmosphere come as standard, and there’s even an incontinent spectral cat.
