BBC Countryfile Magazine’s New Year’s Resolutions for 2016

Here at BBC Countryfile Magazine HQ we've been thinking about all the things we'd like to see and do in 2016, and have each made a resolution that involves getting outside more and exploring our glorious countryside.

Here’s our resolution round-up from the team – we will report back at the end of the year on whether we were successful or not…

In 2016, I’d like to hear bitterns booming on the Somerset Levels – which would be a first for me in the UK. Plus, I would like to climb five peaks in the Brecon Beacons.

I plan to run all over North Somerset as I get fit for a half marathon later in the year, and I want to take every chance to wander the hills and camp wild with friends and family.

Mine isn’t exactly eco-friendly, but I want to learn to drive this year, so that I don’t have to rely on public transport/generous friends to get out into the countryside. In an ideal world I’d like to buy a little old van and do it up inside, so I can go adventuring further afield at weekends and so on.

I’d also like to try horse riding in a beautiful landscape this year, as it’s always terrified/fascinated me.

Oh, and surfing. I want to do more surfing.

I recently moved to Somerset from London, so in 2016 I’m keen to make the most of easy access to the countryside by getting outside to do more trail running, hiking and cycling. I’ve also got my eye on doing a couple of trail running events in the Brecon Beacons and Dartmoor later in the year.

I’m also planning to walk Offa’s Dyke with my Dad this year, so looking forward to exploring this beautiful National Trail with him.

I plan to make the most of all of the rainfall we have had and no doubt will continue to get this year to visit the Welsh waterfalls in the Brecons Beacons National Park.

I enjoyed our Christmas team day out to Severn Beach near Bristol to go bird watching, so in 2016 I’d like to learn more bird species, so I can identify them when out and about.

In 2016 I’m planning to get fit by cycling in the countryside and spending time outdoors with my two young children.

I’m going on a seven-day sea-kayaking adventure to St Kilda in June, so my plan is to get as fit as possible in advance of that by hiking, running, wild swimming and surfing. I also intend to use the new binoculars I was given at Christmas for more bird-watching, and I’d like to visit at least one Dark Sky Park this year for a night of star-gazing.
