Holidaying without using your car is often easier than you might imagine. To help you plan your car-free break we've gathered a selection of cosy cottages and cabins near train stations across the UK.

From Truro guests can easily reach Falmouth, Penzance, St Ives and other less well known Cornish towns by rail. By boat they can visit Falmouth or National Trust Trelissick using the Fal river ferry, plus by foot or bike, it’s easy to explore the Bissoe coast to coast cycling route, which goes from Devoran to Portreath. They can also enjoy the old railway route to Truro and pick up a Fal river boat or visit the beautiful city and cathedral.

Pandy Bach, near Machynlleth, Mid-Wales

On the southern edge of the Snowdonia National Park, with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, this converted 19th century woollen mill feels remote yet is easily accessible via Machynlleth station. Owned by a farming family, the three bedroom, three bathroom house is stylishly furnished and offers a great base for walkers and mountain bikers, with plenty of routes to explore right from the door including the Glyndwr's Way and Holey Bike Trail. There's a large terrace from which to enjoy the views in warmer weather and plenty of open-plan living space for a family and up to two dogs.

The Grade II* listed Llanfendigaid Estate is steeped in history and located close to the sea on one of the most attractive stretches of Welsh coastline at the southern end of the Snowdonia National Park.

Nearby is the Talyllyn Railway and Aberdyfi, with its excellent sailing, good pubs and five miles of golden sand and dunes.   • Tonfanau station was built to serve an Army camp, long since closed and now just serves Llanfendigaid and a few local houses. It is on the Cambrian Coast line, which goes direct to Birmingham International for the airport or changes to London.
