Suffer from insomnia? It could be what you wear in bed... Here's why...

Why what you wear in bed could be jinxing your chances of a good night's sleep

Just what should you wear in bed?  Or not, as studies show that a drop in core body temperature is linked to falling asleep faster, which is why many people hit the sack au natural after having a cold shower, says James Witts

There’s also evidence that sleeping naked reduces awakenings in the night due to overheating, plus skin health’s improved due to less sweat and friction compared to wearing night attire.

Of course, in cooler climes, clothing is often preferred. (Or if you want to protect your sheets as research reveals that the average person breaks wind 15 to 20 times a day, including in your sleep, and each time you do a very tiny amount of pooh leaves your body.

If that’s not a sex killer, we don’t know what it is!) If you do, natural fibres, like wool, are often better than synthetic because they can be more breathable.

One final one before you drift off: there are rumours that wearing socks in bed helps some people fall asleep faster. Why is purportedly down to widening blood vessels in the feet to promote heat loss. Which obviously sounds counter-intuitive as surely wearing socks warms, not cools, the feet? Suffice to say, there’s no objective evidence wearing socks in bed helps people sleep better, apart from those who might suffer from poor circulation.
